The purpose of this study is to find out how group art therapy influences children\'s self-concept by
conducting the therapy to socially and environmentally neglected rural small size classes children as
non-operating classrooms increase due to the continuous decrease of rural population. The target of the
study is small size classes in rural areas with less than 10 students per class among schools located in
South Chungcheong Province A Gun S Myeon and the entire classes of 6th grade in S elementary school
were the experimental groups and the target classes with the same conditions of the neighborhood M
elementary school were the control groups.
Target students were a total of 20 students, 10 in the experimental group, 10 in the control group and
the experimental period was from March 16, 2009 to June 15, 2009 and the therapy was conducted 1
time 50 minutes per week, a total of 14 times.
Before and after implementation of group art therapy, control group design was applied and I examined
the changes based on the whole self-concept and sub-regions by using SPSS WINDOW Version 12.0 for
reliability analysis and by conducting t-test for identifying whether the two groups are homogeneous or
not, ANCOVA (Analysis of covariance) for pre and post significant differences between two groups.
Also, to supplement shortcomings of statistical analysis, I examined qualitative changes by recording and
directly observing and recording verbal or nonverbal communication in quarterly activities with the help of
the teacher who participated as an observer.
