This study proposed activities before writing through the activation of background knowledge and conversation in the process of writing. In doing so, it is intended to make students feel less burden in writing, and bring conviction and interest to them in writing. In other words, it is aimed at allowing students to, according to a type of writing, do activities before writing, such as experience activities, preparing of an outline, use of example sentences and supplementary materials, thinking nets and thinking bubbles and discussion. Activities before writing are based on the process-centric writing, which helps students prepare many stories to write and elaborate them. Experience activity allows students to draw their own experience as best as they can, and write their experiences with vivid expressions. Preparing of an outline helps students write in consideration of a type of writing through the instruction of a format of outline, which changes according to a type of writing. When students prepare an outline and write their stories, they can make a well-set frame in writing. With the use of example sentences and supplementary materials, students can easily learn the sense of writing from other writings and gain confidence in writing. In addition, thinking nets, thinking bubbles, and discussion will be able to let students get a lot of stories in their freely thinking process. During the activities before writing, conversation centered discussion is required between an instructor and a student, and between students. That is because students can receive a stimulus in their thinking process and activate their background knowledge when they are asked to answer questions from instructors and have conversations with other students. Discussion, one of activities before writing, helps students acquire not just knowledge, but a variety of information necessary forwriting, and gives a big impact on the improvement of student's writing skill. Most students who are poor at writing neither know what they should write nor draw their background knowledge. Accordingly, instructors should understand the writing difficulties that students are faced with, and provide them with various strategies relating to activities before writing. By doing so, they should help students write with ease and offer them an effective writing strategy to improve their writing skill.
