The purpose of this study is to examine the biological effectiveness of mandala art therapy for the
improvement of left and right brain hemisphere’s balance and prefrontal lobe’s executive functions of adult
female with prefrontal lobe syndrome using objective and delicate evaluative method. 3 married and 3
unmarried women whose age is thirty to forty participated in this study. They were showing the symptoms
of prefrontal lobe syndrome including difficulty with emotional regulation, inconsistency, errors in
perception, spontaneity, lacking in judgement, and attention deficiency et al. The mandala art therapy
program consisting of 8 sessions was held on a weekly basis for an hour from February to April, 2012.
Using BES-2000 EEG and Kim’s neuropsychological test, pre-test and post-test were conducted. The results
of this study are as follows: First, female participants with prefrontal lobe syndrome showed some gradual
changes in every sessions due to their inner and outer harmony. Second, their left and right brain’s balance
index were improved. Third, after the program, their prefrontal lobe’s executive functions were enhanced. In
conclusion, this study suggests that mandala art therapy can be effective on adult female’s balance of left
and right brain hemisphere, and the enhancement of executive functions of prefrontal lobe. This study will
be a significant endeavor in using EEG and neuropsychological test to show the effectiveness of mandala
art therapy objectively, and showing relationship between brain and emotion.
