This study aims to elucidate the features of geography assessment of West African 5
countries. The materials for analysis are the geography examinations(2011-2015) of
WASSCE. The geography syllabus of WASSCE take a role to suggest clearly assessment
elements and learning direction of geography for candidates. The syllabus match highly
the geography examinations. The main themes are practical and physical geography,
economic and human geography, regional geography of candidate’s home country,
regional geography of Africa. The geography assessment of WASSCE uses a multiple
assessment instruments, i.e. objective questions, essay-type questions, performance of field
work to measure candidates’ abilities. The geography assessment sets importance on
more geography knowledges and understandings than geographical inquiry as behavioral
domains. And the geography assessment of West African 5 countries emphasizes abilities
to apply practical methods of geography, for example graphicacy skills and field works.
