The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of gender and personality traits to the types of
school safety accidents in elementary school students. The subjects in this study were 170 students who were
selected from among 200 fifth graders in three different elementary schools in Daegu City. Cross tabulation
was utilized to look for the relationship of gender and personality traits to the aspects of safety accidents,
and x2-test was used to check the level of significance. The conclusions were as follows: First, as to the types
of safety accidents by gender, there was a significant difference between the boys and girls. 59.6% of the boys
had ever underwent an accident, and the rate of the girls with the same experience stood at 21.1%. In regard
to accident time by gender, 50.9% of the boys, the highest percentage, had accidents in outdoor class, and
56.3% of the girls, the highest percentage, underwent accidents during time to rest. It suggested that it's not
easy to predict when girls usually undergo accidents, and that accidents happened when the children weren't
well cared or guided. As for the intensity of accidents, both of the boys and girls met with mild accidents a
lot. Second, as for connections between personality traits and the tpyes of safety accidents, the group of
students who were stable and active had the least accidents, and accidents took place a lot among the groups
of students who were introspective and inactive and who were short-tempered. There was a difference in
accident frequency between the students who were stable and active and those who were reserved and
inactive, as the rate of those who had ever met with an accident stood at 47.4% and 42.3% of the two
groups respectively. Regarding the intensity of accidents, the stable and active students were injured mildly in
many cases, and many of those who were reserved and inactive and who were short-tempered got hurt
moderately or seriously. In conclusion, it's found that those who were active and aggressive weren't
necessarily at higher risk of safety accidents. So students should learn how to behave for the prevention of
school safety accidents and how to train their ability to cope with diverse dangerous situations.
