This study is focused on understanding the adoption experiences of the infertile women, who are in most demand of adoption. The results of this study will provide the basic materials for psychological therapy and counseling for adoptive families and will also help infertile women in making their decision to adopt. Descriptive phenomenological methods proposed by A. Giorgi were used for the analysis of experiences of 8 adoptive mothers who were infertile before adoption. The study has derived 418 meaning units, 93 summarized meaning units, 29 subcategories, and lastly 7 constitutional elements which were considered as the essential meanings of experiences; “perception of infertility”, “psychological self-defense”, “intense emotion”, “impulsive transfer to adoption”, “being compensated with the adoptive child”, “becoming an adoptive parent”, and “continuous desire to grow up”. The meaning of the psychological phenomenon of adoptive mothers who experienced infertility can be described as a dynamical structure of essential meanings in which the ego retreats temporarily because of infertility. However, after adoption parenthood is achieved and it finally resumes growing up psychologically toward ‘self-actualization’.
