This article investigates a way to promote higher order thinking in social studies by
observing class activities in a U.S. high school. To do this, the meaning of higher order thinking
is examined. It is suggested that it is composed of various kinds of thinking, such as critical
thinking, problem-solving abilities, and creative thinking. In addition, recent research on
competence can be included in this definition. Although the need to develop higher order
thinking has been acknowledged by scholars in education research in Korea, its concrete
development within the curriculum is very limited.
In this context, this article adopts one social studies class in a U. S. high school as a model
for promoting higher order thinking. By examining the concrete curriculum and class activities
demonstrated in the research projects of that class, this article suggests essay writing classes as
an effective way to develop higher order thinking through research project activities.
