청소년발전에 관한 현대이론과 연구들은 청소년의 시민적 관여가 사회의 번영과 건강한 청소년과 성인이 되는 한 방법이라는 점과 그 중요성을 강조하 고 있다. 본 논문은 청소년의 시민적 관여에 대한 이론적 기초로서 시민적 관여 (civic engagement)의 개념정의에 대해 고찰하고, 청소년발전이론과의 관계를 “여섯 개의 C”에 관한 논의를 중심으로 알아 본다. 청소년발전에 관한 “5개의 C”에는 역량(competence), 자신감(confidence), 연결(connection), 성격(character), 그리고 돌봄(care)으로 논의되고 있으며, “여섯 번째 C”는 기여(contribution)로 서 시민적 관여와 직접적으로 관련된다. 또한 시민적 관여의 주요한 관련요인 으로서 시민교육, 단체와 활동에의 참여, 지역사회 봉사참여, 그리고 가족적 요 인 등을 제시하고 시민적 관여의 가치와 청소년참여의 이점들에 대해 알아보았 다. 이러한 논의들은 청소년의 시민적 관여, 긍정적 발전, 그리고 청소년참여 등 에 대한 이론적·실천적 이해에 기여할 것으로 기대된다·
Contemporary theory and research in youth development stress the importance of civic engagement as it provides a path to a thriving society and a healthy adolescence and adulthood. In order to give better understanding of civic engagement in youth and youth development, this article first provides a conceptualization of civic engagement in youth and discusses its definitional arguments and components of civic engagement. Secondly, the article explains the development systemtheory and the “SixthC” of contribution as it relates to civic engagement in youth in addition to “Five Cs” of competnece, confidence, connection, character, and caring to describe the key features of PYD(positive youth development). Thirdly, it highlights important factors within youth and their contexts that might support the development of civic engagement in youth. This includes civic education, participation in school and youth activities, volunteerism and community service, and parenting behaviors and family civic education It also emphasizes the values of civic engagement in youth and the benefits of youth participation and involvement that may be applicable to the theoretical and practical understanding of the civic engagement, positive development, and youth participation
