The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of
civics for citizenship education during the era of the US Military
Administration and early Korean government. For this purpose, the
documents of those periods are collected and analyzed.
The US Military Administration and early Korean government took
a civics as a core subject for the cultivation of democratic
citizenship. Civics introduced by the US Military Administration and
early Korean government was based on american community civics.
However, due to coup and dictatorship, democracy of Korea was in
danger and civics was removed from the school curriculum.
Although the restoration of democracy, the reintroduction of civics
as school subject has not been implemented. This paper argues that
the effective and systematic civic education requires restoration of
civics.
