This study analyzes the existence of adultcentrism as one of the most common obstacles of youth civic engagement and youth participation. This study also proposes theoretical and practical suggestion to overcome the adultcentrism based on the discussions and criticism. Through the literature reviews, the essence of the adultism is disrespect of the young based on the age difference. Adultism refers to all the behaviors and attitudes that flow and are entitled to act upon young people in many ways without their agreement. Adultism takes many forms including physical and sexual abuse, verbal interactions, and common statements. etc. School examples, institutional examples, and cultural practice examples are also reviewed. The positive perspective, youth-centered intervention, and good adult-youth relationship are suggested as suggestive tasks to overcome adultism in addition to the critical discussions on the topic of child development theory, child and youth rights, and practice interventions.
