As you may already know, Korea has a long history, namely, 4299 years old. She long been known as the “Eastern Land of Civility”. But Korean society in the past was feudalistic one, only upper class children & youth were educated through mainly chinese classics. They could enjoy the fruits of high foreign civilization because of their leisure hour. In other words children & youth from working class could not enjoy the culture not only because of their lower social status but also because of its difficulty for the laboring children & youth who did not have enough time to spend for this “luxurious” endevore. In 1446 King Se-Jong and his foremost scholars ereated Korean alphabet, Han-gul which consists of 24 letters(10 vowels and 14 consonants) in order to make the letters accessible to ordinnary people without too much labour. Han-gul is easy to learn, and easy to write because one symbol .stands for one sound.
