The significance of this study is rather scrutinizing the essence of filial piety than making a study of the filial education. Therefore, it has defined what is filial piety and discussed thoroughly its methodology. Currently a great emphasis has been placed on filial education to establish a definite national code of conduct or ethics. Yet a viewpoint of filial piety or duty has neither properly defined nor clarified the guiding principles for filial education. I consequently feel that it is necessary to establish what its essence is. Original filial piety speaks for one serving one's parents, which is derived from the young being respectable to the old. It can be, there• fore, said that filial concept had begun with primitive relationships between parents and their children regulating a kind of a family order. Filial piety is the essence of all virtues and an education is needed to cultivate the virtues. As filial piety is the source of all virtues, it serves as the basis of moral conduct of not only relationships between parents and their children, but also of a family, a neighbor, a local community, and a country. As it was the best of all virtues once in Korea, filial piety has become a national tradition and of her educational thoughts because it has been regarded as the fundamentals of ethics and an indicator of national education. The methods in practising filial piety are as follows: 1. Filial Piety in Self-preservation -it is primary filial piety to maintain a healthy body inherited from one's parents. 2. Filial Piety in Reverence -it is to show respect and to serve one's parents with dedication and devotion. 3. Filial Piety in Obedience -it is to obey the commands of one's parents. 4. Filial Piety in Serving -it is to serve one's parents by living with them and always considering their needs. 5. Filial Piety in accomplishing the Will of Parents -it is to follow the will or wishes of one's parents and ancestors. 6. Filial Piety in Supporting -it is to unfailingly provide for one's parents spiritual support. 7. Filial Piety in Remonstrating -it is to reason with one's parents in a modest way even in cases of their being far from rightious. 8. Filial Piety in Performing Memorial Service - it is not only obligatory to serve one's parents during their lifetimes but also after their lifetimes, as well as that of their ancestors. 9. Filial Piety in Honoring Parents- it is to constantly aim for greater success in worth while pursuits which would bring honor to himself and to his family.
