Any comparison of European and American educational systems must look into the nature and extent of some fundamental differences Europe with an area of some four million square miles is less than a third the size of the United States and Canada together. Europe’s population is more than double that of Canada and the United States. Europe has a population density of 150 per square mile whereas the United States has a density of 25 per square mile and Canada 5 per square mile. As a result, any comparison of Europe and America must take into account the factor of distance and its impact upon the relationships between countries and peoples. Distance in America has influenced the growth and development of its social, economic and political systems as it has the European.
