영문초록

This study was performed for the purfose of the investigation on the following problems: that is, in the traditional society of Lee's Dynasty, the most honorable virtue of women was considered as "chastity" in common with loyalty and filial piety, and the woman conducting herself virtuously was also called as a "heroic woman", whose conduct was recorded and promulgated in order to be praised as a model of all of the Korean women. The rules which were recommended for the women to follow the chaste manner of the heroic woman were recorded in the kinds of the Sam-Kang-Haeng-Sil(the three fundamental principles of the behavior in human relations), the representatives of which were (1) the Sam-Kang-Haeng-Sil-Do(the illustration of the principles) published in the reign of the King Sae Jong, (2) the Sok-Sam-Kang-Haeng-Sil(a continuation of the above publication) published in the reign of the King lung long and {3) the Dong-Kuck-Sin-Sam-Kang-Haeng-Sil (a new series of it on the East Country-Korea-) published in the reign of the King Kwang Hae Kun. And the researcher have analyzed them and studied on the motive of the compilation, the details of them, the promulgation of them and the responses of peoples, the restraint and punishment based on them, the actual conditions, and their merits and demerits; that is, the educational thought based upon the practical aspect of the education for the women of virtue. The first the system of the contents were organized in orded of the descriptions on the conducts, the illustrations, the poetic praises and the sentences translated into the pure Korean about each of the 110 heroic women described in the contents of the above(1), 70 in the (2) and 775 in the (3). The second, as the methods to educate them, the masters of families, fathers aged men, professors or teachers were charged to teach the young with their utmost efforts, but the women were taught by their relatives. Notwithstanding these educational activities extending over the whole nation, the women's sexual extravagance and the relaxation of the social order raised the various kinds of social problems. Therefore, the government in the reign of the King Tae long enacted not only "The Law of Remarrige Prohibition" to prevent the social disorder but also all sorts of the preventive measures related to such a problem and practised them. The fundamental idea of the education for the women of virtue was based poun the thought that "remaining chaste and faithful of women" meant "keeping the right home" which brought "the right manners". The system of the thought was like the followings : (1) The personal practice of the three doctrines that a) the unmarried woman had to follow her father, b) the married woman had to fellow her husband, and c) the widow had to follow her son. (2) The woman's successful performance of her duty. (3) The woman's virtue. (4) The model of the ideal woman. It seemed that the female virtue which had the compound elements like the: above was needed in the society of the times, and the types of the heroic women were able to classified as (1) the women remaining chaste, (2) the women conducting honorably and (3) the others. These women remaining chaste, who was the best moral symbol of women, was recommened to king by the Minister of Propriety every New Year's Day and them she was awaeded a prize, an honour and a fortune, and Jeung-Mun(the red gate which was built infront of the house of a heroic woman, a dutiful son and a loyal subject) was setup to give recognition for her virture, or Bock-Ho(an award exempted from the compulsory service to an heroic woman, a dutiful son or a loyal subject) was granted to her.
