The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between 'the suicidal ideation of male and female students' and 'family communication process'. For this, we studied the relation between 'the suicidal ideation of male and female students' and Walsh's 'family communication process'. To gather data, the investigators distributed 150 questionnaires to 150 male and female college students from three colleges in the metropolitan area. After excluding improper data from the collected questionnaires, total 116 were put to stepwise regression. The research findings were as follows: male students who have much 'suicidal ideation' was significantly related only to 'clarity' which is a subfactor of 'family communication process', and female students was significantly related only to 'emotional reaction' which is a subfactor of 'family communication process'. Those findings produces that male students who have much 'suicidal ideation' incline to choose direct, clear, honest communication, and female students who have much 'suicidal ideation' do to choose 'the interaction of empathy' between the members of family, generous communication which can be receptive to any kind of emotion. Those findings suggests that the counselor should approach to both of male and female students who have much 'suicidal ideation' with different type of communication method. In other words, To prevent suicide, they implies that a counselor should communicate clearly with male students and in emotional reaction with female students.
