As a growing number of cultural tourists place high priority on learning, first-hand experience, and reflection, museums are emerging as an important cultural tourism resource and tool to increase cultural knowledge. Bukchon is a historical place that can be traced back to the Joseon Dynasty. Today, it is an urban hanok(traditional korean house) cluster of unique architectural value that can't be seen anywhere else. It is also an area with actual residents. Such a historical and cultural background is making this area a center of culture and art, and it has given Bukchon the unique feature of a living museum cluster revolving around the Samcheong-dong and Gahoe-dong areas. This paper provides the basic framework with which to leverage the potential of Bukchon's ‘contents’ given its special cultural features and aims to explore ways of transforming Bukchon into a cultural tourism resource based on the area's many museums. To this end, this paper first looks at the role and function of the museums, especially their features as a cultural tourism resource. Then, based on the implications derived from the case studies of other local and foreign museums being used as a cultural tourism resource, we propose the following strategies to leverage Bukchon's museums' potential as a cultural tourism resource. First, strengthen local capacity and develop local community programs that encourage active participation and exchange of residents. Second, create a Bukchon Museum Festival, etc., as a joint promotional effort between Bukchon's museums so as to develop a Bukchon brand that reflects the area's uniqueness. Third, integrate the operation and marketing efforts of Bukchon's museum programs based on sharing and collaboration between museums. Fourth, construct a hanok museum that can serve as a museum headquarters and which can operate as a hanok multi-complex that can hold exhibitions, performances, and other activities. Fifth, develop courses and 'storytelling' that combine museums, exhibitions, traditional workshops open to visitor participation, various cultural facilities and historical sites, local culture, etc. The integrated management of tangible and intangible heritage and the active participation of the local residents will be central to successfully transforming Bukchon's museums into a cultural tourism resource. Also, the continuous development of Bukchon's museums will require a community-centered approach, human-oriented storytelling, ergonomic design, and a cultural eco-system-friendly approach.
