Epitaph is the documentary literature in that individual life is reconstructed and evaluated. Reconstruction and evaluating of individual life is based on the values of the ideal human of the time. So in epitaphs of Goryeo dynasty, we can see Goryeo people’s valuation basis of the ideal personality and behavior. The writers of epitaphs of Goryeo expressed their thoughts that the valuable life was to get a high status, live a long life and in splendor and have many descendants. By the way they emphasized a person who wanted to get them had to have the moral personality and behavior. In this way they as the ruling class rationalized social inequality. Regardless of sex, they said that the ideal personality and behavior was ‘modesty, frugality, politeness, honesty, benevolent, intelligent, diligence, quiet attitude and neatness’. Especially they emphasized person in wealth and honor should have the attitude of modesty and frugality. And they strictly distinguished between social roles of men and women, evaluated the personality and behvior of men and women differently. They praised the men unconcerned in household affair and the women devoted to household. Epitaphs of Goryeo dynasty was not only the writings for praising the personality and behavior of man or woman but also the media for forming a good reputation by being read. Therefore epitaphs of Goryeo was the production in that Goryeo’s ruling circles expressed their model thought recognized formally. They praised the ideal personality and valuable behavior in their epitaphs, and learned and passed down them. So they had constructed the formal and ideal human character.
