The purpose of this study is to trace Richard Rorty's vision of religion. It is not a simple task to define his view of religion because Rorty labels himself both an aggressive atheist who is a?religious unmusical? and a ?romantic polytheist? all at the same time. It is also difficult to understand a pragmatist who decreed a moratorium on philosophy as the adjudicator of the foundation of knowledge. Insisting himself to be anti-essentialist and anti-absolutist, he has tenaciously pursued the religious quest to the very last stage of his life. Rorty regards religion, alongside science and technology, as one of pragmatic institutions that meet human needs. Different needs naturally led to polytheism. However, Rorty emphatically insists that religion must be confined to private and romantic inspiration and not play any role in public arena. His claim is that it should be so, not only because of philosophical reasons. His belief in the democratic conviction and a pragmatic vision of social ethics lies behind this insistence. Rorty's criticism of religion is not merely a byproduct of a philosophical effort to prevent the detrimental effect of religion and to project a pragmatic utopia. A persistent religious longing permeates his life; the criticism may well be the manifestation of disappointment with an unfulfilled pursuit.
