The contemporary society regarded as the post-industrial society has entered
the society of hyperconsumption, which passed through modern society of
consumption by accelerating the infinite desire of human being. The modern
individuals became the subject of consumption, and the mode of consumption
in the new era, which is qualitatively and also quantitatively different from that
of consumption in the previous era, determines the lifestyle of the individuals.
It is worth noting that in this economic transition, there is the conversion of
the meaning of the individual and the needs of the individual as well.
Historically, the concept of the individual in the strict sense was established in
the Western modern society. The self-assertive individual, who acquires the right
and is accountable for her/his action, is conceived of as the subject of property.
In the post-modern era the individual obtains, however, the novel meaning of
the subject, namely the hyperindividual as homo consumericus. Thus it is
necessary to elucidate the genuine meaning of the individual and the
fundamental structure of post-modern society. But this meaning can be shown,
only when it is brought into the relationship with that of the modern
individual. In this respect we seek to investigate the novel meaning of the
individual and the needs of the individual in the post-modern era. By doing
this we will clarify the difference between the modern subject and the
post-modern subject and moreover the interrelationship between them.
