Recently, identification of "What is the objective of art education and how should it be constructed?" has arisen as a basic task in art circles. Therefore, it is urgent that historic, theoretical, and practical researches be undertaken to resolve the task of art education. This study will investigate how art education was established during the Japanese Colonial Period and how developed and changed over time in terms of the historical aspects. In fact, art education has been known to change as a social tool according to social circumstances of the times. Under absolutism, not democracy, statesmen were strongly involved in art education in any way they wished. It was a worldwide phenomenon and Korea was not the exception. Art education was conducted for the occupation of Korea and/or for forcing Koreans to become Japanese citizens. Given these factors, this study will provide suggestions for setting new horizons in art education for current art education and for further development in the future. This will be accomplished by investigating historic facts in art education during the Japanese Colonial Period when art education was implemented as a direct tool for specialized purposes. This study restricted the research scope to art education during the Japanese Colonial Period and was further restricted to art education in elementary schools, which may be evaluated as somewhat subjective and convenience-oriented. However, there was a restriction in the scale of the thesis and I have the intention to engage in more precise research within the restricted scope.
