The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between smartphone addiction and mental
health according to exercise hours for elementary school students who participate in after-school exercise class.
The subjects of this study were sampled 217 elementary school students in Seoul province using a purposive
sampling method. Object data were collected through the questionnaire based on National Information Society
Agency(2011)'s Smartphone Addiction Inventory and Kim & Ahn(2006)'s Mental Health Problem Scale. 3
exercise groups were categorized with everyday exercise(EE), 3 to 5 hours exercise per week(3-5h), under 2
hours exercise per week(2h). The One Way ANOVAs, multiple correlation, and path analysis were used in
order to exam the relationships among variables. Based upon the result of this study, the following
conclusions were drawn as follows: Frist, Compared with 2h group, EE group got significantly low points in
smartphone addition scale which consists of difficulty of daily living, withdrawal symptoms, tolerance, and
imaginary world. Second, EE group was lower levels of mental health problems of depression, anxiety,
compulsion, aggression. Exercise hours brought out direct causal effects in mediating smartphone addiction,
but showed indirect causal effects in mediating mental health for elementary school children.
