Toegye is one of the most influential scholar in the history of
Korean confucianism. The impact of Toegye philosophy, seen from
academical content, is typified by emphasis of mind study or a
favor in activeness of Li. However, when looking only learning and
considering the influence on academic culture in the late Joseon
Dynasty, the most profound impact is the establishing the school
of learning a self-improvement based on strong 'self-cultivation'.
Learning a self-improvement is different from passive study that
highly emphasizes on others' perspective over subjectivities.
Learning a self-improvement is not interested in 'because of
others' or 'to show', 'to win a competition', but it is rather to
recognize the reason and the subjectivity in own study and
perform. Toegye stated that Learning a self-improvement is 'not
concerning reputation and interests of others, it is a true
understanding and a physical practicing in everyday life'. While
Toegye himself strives to fulfill Learning a self-improvement, he
also emphasized Learning a self-improvement to his students.
The spirit of establishing and practicing Learning a
self-improvement continued to his students. People who pursue to
accomplish self-competition rather than a social success gather
Under Toegye. Toegye basically consider students not just the
followers but rather companions carrying out a self-improvement together. Meanwhile, scholars who entered politics to accomplish
Self-cultivation and Governing the people still slog not to lose the
balance of Learning a self-improvement.
In Yongnam region as the center Toegye school, this tradition
remained and developed distinct regional Confucian scholar
culture. In addition, on each national crisis such spirit motivates
and inspires people with the strong loyalty and resistance.
