This study is about Cao Fei’s , which presents hybrid
characteristics of the China’s Post-80s (b?l?ngh?u in Chinese), a generation grown
up experiencing open door and wave of modernization in China. In the city
established by the rapid economic development since the 1980s, Cao Fei and the
generation grew into a type of hybrid that embodies the cultural hybridity caused
by active contacts with the outside world. However, the hybrid zone where
cultural factors that are different each other collide and mutate is also a cracking
point where time and space of old and new dislocate contradictorily. Cao Fei who
is represented as a cultural icon of his generation juxtaposed the 'fantasy' of play
and 'reality' of life on the surreal plot and produced in order to
gaze at the narrative about hybrid identity of herself and her generation. In
, young people (teenagers) in China are given the power of fantasy
of Cosplay (short for compound word ‘Costume Play)’ that repeats metamorphosis
and traverse between the real space of urban Guangzhou in abundance and the
space of working class families in poverty and perform the narrative of comedy
and tragedy about life. Such fantastic stage of comedy and tragedy is a suture line
between fantasy and reality about space and time of old and new on which
Cosplayers impersonated fictional characters appear as another shadow about real
life of Chinese society to play their ontological position surrounded by the world.
However, at the same time, Cao Fei reveals the desire of ‘Cosplayers’ who
don’t express themselves easily in their daily lives through desire of
metamorphosis embedded in the , a modern version of mimicry,
which is based on the premise of the ontological transformation. Through such fantasy of metamorphosis, the artist prepares fantasy world where ‘Cosplayers’
who stand at the crack between desire of reality and desire of ego can face desire
of themselves, which is reality. From such point of argument, this paper studies
Cao Fei’s on the mechanism of fantasy and illuminates it as a
reality drama of fantasy that shows the practice of subjectification of Cao Fei and
the generation to prepare their real position by continuously questioning about
self-evidence of the world and drawing fluid identity.
