The purpose of this study is to verify the effect of storytelling on fostering
emotional development in art appreciation activities for elementary school students
by borrowing storytelling as a part of art appreciation activities. For this, the
researchers examined the theoretical background of storytelling and application
method for art appreciation activity program targeting one class in the sixth grade
of W Elementary School located in Seoul.
The results of this study are summarized as follows:
First, it was improved the emotional expressive ability of children after
performing art appreciation activities through storytelling. As a result to analyze
statistical verification, it was improved emotional expressive ability by developing
stories from their experiences or empathy for the characters in the artworks.
Second, after performing art appreciation activities through storytelling, children
could comprehend and perceive their emotions precisely. According to the reports
and journals of children and daily records of the researchers with the results to
measure the examination, it was appeared that students express their own emotions
with emotional language and metaphorical expressions. Third, the students
participated actively and initiatively in art appreciation activities by the qualitative
research methods using triangulation. Finally, the significance of this study is to
verify the effect of storytelling on improvement of emotional linguistic expressive
ability and perception ability of children qualitatively and quantitatively.
Furthermore, it requires follow-up discussions and studies for art appreciation
activity programs.
