Public museums in South Korea have been established like mushrooms as local governments were
operated. This trend was enough to cause an illusion that an era of the museum has come, and it made
an opportunity to form various arguments.
However, general contents of the discussion about the public museums were noted for weakness. The
problem has been caused in the beginning of establishment for the public museums, though, in that sense,
rather than labor issues and local cultural contents has been placed more central to indicate the problem.
But the most important thing is that the museum does not understand the meaning of the whole
municipality and the mayor pointed out that the directors to operate them. Understanding of the operation
of the museum is the foundation for survival strategy of a public museum. However, they seem to be
little or no interested in museums but think one of the making their administrative achievement.
Now public museums simply does not finish the whole thing by establishing the buildings. The way
to operate the museum should be concentrated with all their strength. It is urgent if it is considered with
the social atmosphere that especially the current function and role of museums is getting to be
increasingly important.
The museum are needed to be placed in a new way, not like the past but new positioning through
survival strategies. In order to operate this way, rather than rule of thumb, adequate staffing and curators
should be assigned, and such as through the development of contents and education programs by them
should be transformed into a living museum. Above all, each one placed in a public museum of curator
workforce is difficult to perform these functions intact. So I recommend that a local museum community
could be operated in each broad area around the municipality. Through the community, the local artifacts,
exhibits and educational programs could be more active by co-management and then could be promoted
to revive local culture. Remarkable phenomenon of older people increases, especially if the future
life-long learning in the future role of the museum as a cultural institution, it is clear that this will be
increased.
Eventually dying of local museums should be operated more actively so that they are created as a
living museum, and it is necessary to understand that this is the rights and obligations of public museums.
