The Story of Minh: The Lifeworld of a Marriage-Labor Immigrant Mother
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 26 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.3 1 1-26 (26 pages)
In this paper, I investigate how Minh, as an immigrant mother, accepts, resists, and transforms available Korean cultural discourses about mothering. With the goal of exploring and understanding the discourses about mothering that pertain to immigrant families in Korea, I examine how local, national, and international histories of race, gender, class, citizenship, nationality, and culture shape the discourses of mothering in Korea. Through this process, the paper addresses the intersection... -
Children’s Understanding of Racial Diversity through Role-Play: A Case Study of Kindergarteners in South Korea
Su-Jeong Wee, So Jung Kim, Kyoung Jin Kim Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 25 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.2 7 125-149 (25 pages)
In spite of the emphases on multicultural education and role-playing activities in early childhood classrooms in South Korea, there has been a startling paucity of studies examining the effectiveness of role-play in teaching kindergarteners multiracial and ethnic awareness. This qualitative case study examines how South Korean kindergarteners develop their perception and understanding of racial and cultural diversity through role-plays. 25 five year-old children and their parents and teacher... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 24 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.2 4 47-70 (24 pages)
The purposes of this research were to understand children’s perception of happiness and to propose suggestions for improving the level of happiness based on children's needs by analyzing individual interviews about what makes them happy and why. The subjects of the study were 163 children aged three to five at two kindergartens and one daycare center in Seoul, South Korea. Research results were as follows. First, they indicated living things (human, animal, plant) and inanimate things... -

The role of units in the concept of length for four- to six-year-old children
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 17 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2015, Vol.9 No.3 5 67-83 (17 pages)
The understanding of the unit is a key point in the development of the concept of length. The understanding of unit is necessary for measuring as well as for comparing indirectly by using unit iteration. This article describes a study that investigated the use of units by children when they were comparing lines indirectly. The correlations between different aspects of the use of units are examined: the understanding of units, the use of units for decomposing and for counting are investigated. -
Whose Job Is It? Parents’ Perspectives on Volunteering to Help in New Zealand Kindergartens
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 20 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2015, Vol.9 No.2 3 51-70 (20 pages)
Volunteering to help is a traditional type of parental involvement in early childhood education. There have been concerns over the justification of teachers’ practice of leaving their work with parents, particularly for routine tasks such as washing and cleaning, however, little research has been conducted to scrutinize the practice and examine parents’ experiences with volunteering to help. Based on a sample of 25 parents from New Zealand public kindergartens, this study investigates parents... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 15 Pages

stage of writing showed statistical significance. Therefore, the result of this study suggests that a child’s developmental stage of writing could affect the level of 5-year-olds’ written narratives. Second, there were significant differences in 5-year-olds’ usage of cohesive devices when relating their personal experiences in their spoken and written narratives. The sum of conjunction and anaphoric references (i.e., cohesive devices) was higher in spoken narrative expressions than in written... -
Taiwanese Mothers as Their Child’s First English Teacher: Issues and Challenges
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 18 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2013, Vol.7 No.3 1 1-18 (18 pages)
In Taiwan, current policy encourages parents to participate fully in their children’s education and to regard themselves as their children’s first teacher. There is, however, little data about whether mothers do indeed perceive themselves as a “teacher” of English language and literacy to their pre-school-aged children in home contexts. Nor is it clear how they enact this role and responsibility during everyday interactions with their children. This study investigated Taiwanese mothers’... -
