빨간집모기 (Culex pipiens pallens) 4령 유충의 중장 상피를 구성하는 세포들에 대한 미세구조를 전자현미경으로 관찰하였다. 중장은 흡수세포와 재생세포들로 구성된 단층 점막상피를 이루었다. 흡수세포의 첨단부 원형질막은 microvilli로 변형되어 brush border를 형성하였다. 기저원형질막은 심하게 주름이 잡혀 canaliculi를 만들며 길게 발달한 mitochondria와 접해 있었다. 또한 흡수세포는 세포질내에 mitochondria, ER, 그리고 Golgi complex 등이 고루 발달한 전형적인 물질 흡수세포의 형태이었다. 그런데 중장의 전단부의 흡수세포는 미세융모가 짧고 기저막주름이 규칙적으로 평행하게 함입되었고 세포의 높이가 낮은 반면 후단부의 것은 미세융모가 길었으며 기저막이 불규칙하였고 세포가 긴 원주상세포로서 서로 차이가 있었다. 재생세포는 크기가 작고 원추형으로서 세포기관이 미분화된 상태이었고, 세포질의 전자밀도가 높아 검게 보였으며 흡수세포의 기저부상이 기저막상에 위치하고 있었다. 기저막과 근육층 사이에는 많은 기관세지들이 관찰되었으며, 근육은 전형적인 골격근으로서 세포기관이 발달하였다.
The midgut epithelium in the 4th larva of the mosquito, Culex pipiens pallens was observed with electron microscope. The midgut epithelium of the larva is composed of a single-layered absorptive cells and regenerative cells. The free surface of the absorptive cells has a regular array of microvilli “brush border” while cell membranes close to the basal lamina are extremely infolded and a lot of mitochondria are concentrated in those processes. The absorptive cells have well developed rER, mitochondria and Golgi complex. But the midgut epithelium is divided into two distinct anterior and posterior region. The anterior region cells are characterized by the microvilli which are short and loosely packed, and the basal plasma membranes are extremely infolded. The posterior region cells have microvilli which are very slender, compactly arranged and basal infoldings are made irregularly dilated canaliculi. Midgut regenerative cells, positioned basally in the epithelium as a single cells, are small and cone-shaped, and show darker appearance than the absorptive cells. The epithelium is surrounded by the subepithelial space and muscles. The subepithelial space, which is composed of fibrous connective tissue, is innervated by many tracheoles.
