본 비평논문은 왜 역사학에서 사회과학적 이론이 필요한가? 더 구체적 으로 이야기하면 역사학자들은 왜 사회과학 이론에 빠져 들어가게 되는 것인가? 그리고 타 학문 분야에서 수용한 이론을 적용함으로써 역사학의 지평확대에 미친 순기능과 역기능은 무엇인지에 대한 궁금증을 확인하기 위해서 최근 역사학의 명저를 선택하여 확인해 보았다. 이 과정을 통해서 역사가들이 사회과학의 뛰어난 이론들을 수용하여 자신의 전문분야에 적용함으로써 새로운 이해와 지평을 확대하고 있다는 점을 확인 할 수 있었다. 그것은 매우 놀랍고 경이로운 현상이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 그들의 이론에 대한 편집광적 몰입이라고 할 수 있는 이런 추세로 인하여 역사학은 새로운 돌파구와 흥미를 유발하였고, 그 결과로 지금까지 본 것과 같이 값진 성과물들을 얻을 수 있었다. 그러나 역사학은 인문학의 정점에 있는 학문으로 과거를 공부하는 것 이고 과거는 누구나 알다시피 현재의 관전 시점과는 완전히 다른 마치 이 상의 나라의 엘리스가 보는 세계이다. 그런 세계를 관조하기에는 일찍이 그리스 시대부터 지금까지 준비되어온 독창적인 방식이 필요하다. 그리고 그 시대의 자료들을 비판적으로 접근해야 하는 아주 혹독한 자기 검열의 작업을 필요로 하는 것이다. 그 무엇보다도 가설에서 시작해서 이론을 형 성하는 것을 목표로 하는 사회과학과는 완전히 다른 입장에서 서 있는 것 이다. 그럼으로 필자는 사회과학의 이론은 순기능에 비해서 역기능을 역사학에 제공하였다고 감히 말할 수 있었다. 특히나 여기에 소개하고 있는 최근 십년간의 약 7권의 주요저작들을 그런 측면에서 놀라운 보기에 해당 한다고 할 수 있을 것이다.
Recently American History Researchers have greatly been effected by social science and its ideas. In this point, the essay is to rethink about wether this trend is good or not. So many critical history literature have owed magnificent ideas of social science. And so we historians have never escape these trends in the history literature. In order to understand this trend, I selected the contemporary 7 critical history writings. Their new understandings and horizons of histories are resulted from indebting of social sciences’ ideas. Therefore I think that all these recently history books and their writers could not obtain their critical luminary status without obtaining social science ideas. Nevertheless, History disciple have developed since Greece its unique identity through sophisticate and elegance methodological approaches. Concretely speaking, social science researching methode are very deferent from humanist history approaches. The former, above all, construct hypotheses and accumulate its accurate material while history directly go to the manuscript and speak without special assumption. On conclusion, I think, we historians are very heed to catch social science ideas and instead should indulge our unique methodology to study past human beings and its relationship. And so, we historians could much more explains at the least in the problems about in the past than any other discipline such as social science.
