The purpose of this study was to interpretate perception of preservice special
education teachers through volunteering experiences of blind sports. To achieve the
goal, we involved 6 students who majored in the department of adapted physical
education at the B university. They were participated in 2015 IBSA (International Blined
Sports Federation) World Games as a sports support staff, as well as they participated
in Chungcheongnam-do Eoullim Goalball competition as a player in South Korea. We
used inductive analysis method after collecting the data by in-depth interview,
participants' daily record, and participation observation. Authenticity of data was verified
by member check, triangulation, and peer debriefing.
The findings of this study were as follows. First, the participants came to recognize
that individuals with visual impairments were same as them through the experiences of
blind sports. Second, they came up with respect on conquer spirit of people with visual
impairment after experiencing the goalball competition as player. Lastly, they were
motivated to increase professionalism related to their academic major. On the other
hand, we found that they still had the perception that individuals with visusal
imparement were difficult to integrate in our society. In order to foster the good
teacher, we need to develop the volunteer program regarding to individuals with
disabilities, which is focusing on experience, and professional feedback in order to
connect between service- learning.
