계몽의 객체화의 정신은 자연뿐 아니라 주체 역시 마찬가지로 양화의 방 식을 통해 사물화한다. 이것은 사물로부터 모든 질적 특성을 사상하는 것이며, 인 간의 삶을 물화하고 파편화한다. 이러한 사유의 근원에는 주체와 객체의 엄격한 이 분법이 자리히고 있는데, 헤르더는 '표현' 개념으로 이를 극복하고자 한다. 표현, 즉 외적으로 드러난 것은 내면의 드러남이며, 따라서 그것은 그저 소여된 것으로, 주 체와 독립된 객체로 간주되어 서는 안 되고 어떤 식으로든 모종의 연관이 있는 것 으로 간주되어야 한다. 헤르더에 따르면 '언어'는 그 표현의 가장 직접적 현상이다. 언어는 주체와 객체를 매개하는 도구가 아니라 주체의 표현이다. 언어는 주체와 객 체가 통합된 것이다. 헤르더의 이 이론은 언어는 대상의 서술에 그 본질이 있다고 하는 전통적 언어이론을 넘어 언어의 한계가 곧 세계의 한계라고 하는 언어이론에 서의 혁명을 가능하게 했고, 또 인문학과 철학에서 사유의 변혁을 가져다주었다.
This article explores Herder’s attempt to overcome the limitations of Enlightenment philosophy. Herder’s central idea is entailed in his concept of “expression”, according to which the external side of something is the appearance of its internal core. The most salient phenomenon of expression is language. Language is understood as an expression of Besonnenheit via the articulation of natural sounds. Besonnenheit is hereby expressed as language, not in language, as a way to fixate and to articulate the flow of nature. According to this view Besonnenheit and language share the same root. Thus, Herder's approach is opposed to the Enlightenment tradition which claims that language is a reflection that follows after thought. In this way, Herder’s ideas go beyond traditional linguistic theories that have understood language essentially as a tool to describe objects. Thereby Herder initiates a revolution in linguistic theory by insisting that the limits of language are the limits of the world. This revolution has led to radically new thoughts in the humanities and in philosophy as well. This paper analyses the reasons for Herder’s critique of the Enlightenment views, it then critically reconstructs the characteristics of his theory of language and briefly sketches some of the most important historical effects of his theory.
