This article is adapted from my Master Dissertation on ‘The Potential of Dance in the OBL(Object
Based Learning) Programme: Investigation to Talking Objcets DU(Dance United) Project at the British
Museum(UCL Institution of Education, University of London, 2014). The aim of this article is to identify
how Object Based Learning Programme explored through dance in the museum influences young people’s
emotional wellbeing (Self-Confidence and Empathy). In this regard, the researcher investigates the Dance
United Project in the Talking Objects Programme as the representative Object Based Learning Programme
at the British Museum targeting vulnerale community youths. Three museum educators and two dance
professionals were interviewed about this special dance project to confirm and emotional wellbeing.
Moreover, the researcher also attempts to use methods of the semi-ethnographical approach as a
participant observer in this project. Through the interviews and observations, four key elements of this
project were found as follows: dialogue, object, collaboration and dance when it comes to the
improvement of youth’s self-confidence and empathy. The research shows how these key elements are
working in the project and impacting on the young participants. In addition, practical recommendations
are suggested through the voices of museum educators as community engaged practioners working in the
Community Partnership Team at the British Museum. Finally, six participants out of ten successfully
finished their presentation in front of museum staff. Eight participants completed their work in order to
perform their dance inspired by the historical object in both the museum and the theatre. In conclusion,
this article argues that the Object Based Learning Programme explored through dance can empower
young people in vulnerable situations in the community to express themselves confidently and empathize
with others, as well as to bring life into the museum and the objects.
