The purpose of this study is to examine the perceived sex education of students
with disabillities by special education teachers teaching students with disabilities and
obtain specific and basic materials for sex education of students with disabilities
The subjects of this study were 160 teachers working for special schools located
at Y City and S City in Jeonnam and G Metropolitan City.
The analysis of this study was conducted with its focus on the importance and
frequency of five sub-areas: 「Knowledge of a body」 「Knowledge of sex health」,
「Knowledge of the development of sex psychology」 , 「Knowledge of marriage and
family」, and 「Knowledge of self-decision」 The results of this study were
outlined as follows.
First, 60.0% of special education teachers perceived 「Knowledge of a body 」as
important to the sex education of students with clisabilities.
Second, 74.4% of special education teachersperceived 「Knowledge of sex health」
as important to the sex education of students with clisabilities.
Third, 70.6% of special education teachers perceived 「Knowledge of the
development of sex psychology 」as important to the sex education of students with
clisabilities.
Fourth, 67.5% of special education teachers perceived 「Knowledge of marriage and
family」 as important to the sex education of students with disabilities.
Finally, 89.4% of special education teachers perceived 'Knowledge of self- decisio
n」 as important to the sex education of students with disabilities.
As suggested in these results, although most teachers(72.5%) agreed to the need of
sex education in school for students with disabilites; its methods and contents are
debatable. The results of this study also suggests that 「Knowledge of self- decisio
n」 is more important than 「Knowledge of a body」 「 Knowledge of sex health」,
「Knowledge of the development of sex psychology」, or 「Knowledge of marriage
and family」. As shown in this study, school tends to deliver only sex knowledge
during sex education. However teacher’s values should not be forced to their
students for personal maturity which is the most important in personal development.
Sex education is needed as human education irrespective of values, and should
consider 「Knowledge of self- decision」 of students with disabilities.
