A leadership program was developed to explore the possibilities of using storytelling strategies to
enhance emotional leadership skills. Researchers developed four lessons for developing emotional leadership
using elements of storytelling, and then collected data through observations, participant interviews, and
activity outputs. Quantitative data to complement the qualitative data were collected as well. Eight
participants were selected from among insurance sales managers, and they attended the program. Study
results showed that storytelling methods enabled participants to 1) change their behaviors by empathizing
with their team workers and reflecting on themselves, 2) implement their newly learned emotional
leadership skills at their workplace, 3) discover their own emotions and actions by communicating with
other participants, and 4) use stories to concretize their observations and experiences. Quantitative
analysis of pre- and post-evaluations of the participants’ emotional leadership skills by 137 team workers
revealed a significant increase in the managers’ emotional leadership skills. Overall, this study
demonstrates that incorporating storytelling methods into emotional leadership programs has the potential
to become an effective strategy for businesses to achieve their leadership learning goals.
