This paper aims to explore the implications when Confucianism is viewed in terms of virtue ethics via examining the conceptual scheme of the authentic person (junzi) vs. the petty person (xiaoren) that had exerted significant influence in shaping early Confucianism as well as the political strife during Chosun dynasty. In early Confucianism the “village honest person” can be considered as the most vivid example that shows the problematic of the conceptual frame of the authentic and petty person. The village honest person, who appears both in the Analects and the Mencius, is called the thief of virtue by Confucius. Why so harsh a criticism against the village honest person who the village people regard ‘honest’ and even ‘virtuous authentic person’? To investigate the reasons why Confucius and Mencius were so critical of the village honest person would reveal the aporia Confucianism must face as a political philosophy that advocates individual’s moral virtue as the criterion and basis of the political authority.
