The purpose of this study is to investigate Korean elementary school students’ perceptions and attitudes
on World Englishes through the survey. In order to do so, the questionnaire, asking their attitudes and
perceptions on World Englishes was conducted on 160 5th-grade and 6th-grade elementary school students
in Busan. The questionnaire included items related to the perception of English as an International
Language and the preference and understanding of different varieties of World Englishes such as American English, British English, Korean English, Singapore English, Indian English, and so on. The results showed
that the survey participants were strongly aware that English was the world’s lingua franca, no longer one
country’s property. They also showed a high level of comprehension in American and British English.
Meanwhile, English education in Korean public school is based on American English, but students actually
have a lot of interest in diverse English varieties and a desire to learn them.
