The purpose of this research is to analyse survey data of preservice elementary
teachers’ estimations on the size and distances of Moon and Sun, and the distances
of solar system and Galaxy. The results were as follows. First, The estimations on the
size and the distance of Moon were relatively desirable, but those on the larger
celestial bodies were very undesirable. Second, the larger the scales of the celestial
bodies were, the less frequently reason writings about their estimation selections were
found. Third, in the case as these celestial bodies’ pictures or images are presented
in preservice teacher education, proportionable reductions relative to the real sizes
should be demonstrated.
