영문초록

The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between computer and smartphone addiction and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in average people. A total of 378 subjects, 126 males and 252 females, were tested on a computer and smartphone addiction scale, a Symptom Severity Scale (SSS), and a Function Status Scale (FSS) for CTS. 49 (12.9%) of the subjects used a computer and 329 (87.1%) were smartphone users. This study showed that among the computer users 23 (46.9%) subjects belonged to the general-user group, 26 (53.1%) subjects were in the potentially-in-danger group, and there was nobody (0%) in the high-risk user group. According to the results for smartphone users, 112 (34%) subjects were in the general-user group, 212 (64.4%) subjects belonged to the potentially-in-danger group, and the high-risk user group was only made-up of 5 (1.5%) subjects. The relationship identified between computer and smartphone addiction with incidences of CTS shows that preventing these addictions can contribute to the prevention of CTS in the average person. Future studies require a wide range of occupational groups, computer and smartphone pain, items related to smartphone use, and multiple-action disorder, including high-risk patients.
