This study verified the effects of sustainable design classes applying PBL on elementary school students'
sense of community. International society is paying attention to sustainable development considering social
development, economic growth, and environmental protection. In order for this aim, global community is
emphasizing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) defining respect toward community as its key
value. Therefore, as the measures to implement ESD through art education, this study examined the effects
of sustainable design classes applying PBL by applying it to the sites of education. Under the theme
‘Playground design for all’, classes are comprised of activities in which playgrounds are created into
models. Eight classes have been applied to elementary school fifth graders. As a result of conducting surveys
by using sense of community survey sheets before and after classes, learners' sense of community
had significant improvements. This study is meaningful since it suggested practical cases through art in
ESD which is to be discussed actively in the future.
