The purpose of this present study is to find out the overall effects of utilizing learning journal on
Korean students’ English language learning. 83 individual research findings in 27 articles were collected,
and a meta-analysis was implemented to synthesize the results of these studies by calculating the mean
effect sizes. This study reviewed and analyzed according to various variables such as school types,
treatment periods, whether the feedback was given, types of learning journal, types of dependent variable,
and so on. The results are as follows: first, the mean effect size of writing English learning journals is
.594, which means the medium effects in general. Second, no statistically significant differences were found
among various moderators and dependent variables, so diverse types of English language instruction using
English learning journal can expect the similar results. Finally, pedagogical implications based on the
research findings and suggestions for further research are also discussed.
