This study is an attempt to investigate how learners recognize and classify various elements in WBI(Web-Based Instruction) screen interface. Ulitimately, the study aimed to clarify which elements instructional designer should consider intensively in the phase of \"image sketching\" and \"rough design\" in designing process, by specifying criteria for learner recognition on compoments of screen interface.
Multidimensional scaling was utilized as a research method and each dimension of semantic space was decided as a criterion of disriminating components of screen interface. A single learner was selected as a subject and the multidimensional interpretation on \"personal space\" was performed. The research material was 12 screens chosen from WBI programs developed and used in major corporations and cyber universities in Korea. The subject marked the scale of similarity for 68 screen-pairs, which were combination of 12 web screens selected and as typical screen interface model of general WBI.
To clarify the answers for research themes, researcher took the actual course in each target university as a student and examined teaching and learning process thoroughly. After course work, daily work sheets which had records of overall learning activities were analyzed to extract the research results in an qualitative aspect and learning interaction data from electronic bulletin board messages.
As a result of a research, the subject\'s semantic space was defined as three dimensional space(Stress=.20, RSQ=.72). Every element related to each demension was analyzed and interpretated, which was lead to the conclusion that three dimensions were 1) dimension of structure(dimension 1), 2) dimension of text(dimension 2), 3) dimension of visual(dimension 2).
The result of research should not be considered nor determined as a fixed principle, as this study was an experimental attempt to recognize \"personal view\" from personal semantic space. To gain more stable principle and fundamentals, follow-up studies such as a research on \"group semantic space\" or a research on various factors on learners should be performed.
