In this essay, I investigated changing aspects of story culture between old and new generation based on the tales collected by fieldwork at Gyeonggi-do Yangju, especially stories of experiences.
The aged can be named as a storytelling generation. Although most of traditional folktales are forgotten, they like to speak stories and know the way to speak stories. Their stories about experiences in Korean War or married life have literary interest and emotion. Sometimes they make impressive storytelling events in harmony with folktales.
The middle-aged people have little interest and ability in literary tales. They form a generation lacking of folktales. They also reveal difficulty in speaking stories of experiences in literary style. On the other hand they have interest in speculative and logical discourses about the life. I regard it as a influence of modern lifestyle.
The teenagers form a generation of free and easy expression. They tell various kinds of literary story: story of experiences, school legend, story about internet novel etc. They have interest and capacity in creating fictional stories. Especially the fashion of ‘internet novel’ among teenagers is remarkable. I can see the characteristics of new storytelling generation.
For the sake of continuous development of story culture it is necessary to spread interactive communication between old and new generation. The literary property of traditional folktale should be adopted to the story culture of new generation. I think it is possible.
