한국 천주교 순교자 설화는 한국 천주교 순교자전류 또는 한국 천주교회사 관련 저술에 기록되어 전하는, 18－19세기 한국 천주교 순교자들의 삶과 죽음에 대한 이야기들이다. 이들은 이제까지 주로 역사학 또는 종교학 및 신학 연구의 대상이 되어 왔을 뿐, 문학 연구의 대상으로서는 주목을 받지 못했다. 그러나 자료의 종류와 양이 많고, 형성시기가 비교적 분명하고, 전승 공동체의 성격이 특수하다는 점에서 이들은 매우 흥미로운 조건을 갖춘 구비문학 연구의 대상이라고 할 수 있다. 이에 한국 천주교 순교자 설화의 주요 자료들을 국문학계에 소개하고, 그 문학적 특성을 고찰하고자 한다.본 연구에서 다룬 자료들은 기해박해(1839) 당시부터 몇 년에 걸쳐 국내의 여러 천주교 신자들에 의해 집필되고 보완된 공동작 기해일기(己亥日記)와 1874년 프랑스 파리에서 간행된 달레(Dallet) 신부(神父)의 저술 한국천주교회사(Historie de l\'Église de Corée)에 수록되어 있는 이야기들이다. 한국 천주교 순교자 설화 중 처녀 순교자 설화와 궁녀 순교자 설화 등 두 가지 유형을 여성 동정 순교자 설화로 분류하고, 서사전개상의 특징, 주인공의 성격, 주제 등을 분석했다.
The Korean Catholic martyr story is a new term for the life and death stories of Korean Catholic martyrs and martyress of the 18th century and the 19th century, which are found in hagiographies and in history books of the Korean Catholic Church. These stories have been treated as important materials in historical science, in theology, and in the science of religion, but in the study of Korean literature they have been almost unnoticed despite of their great value. They are indeed very interesting material for the study of Korean oral literature in some regards：the time when these stories were created and transmitted is relatively concrete, and the group of people who created and transmitted these stories is specific. This paper introduces some of the most important types of the Korean Catholic martyr story and analyzes their narrative characteristics.
