본 연구는 한국 대학생들이 심리적 특질이 안정적인지, 지속적인지, 출생 시부터 차이가 존재하는지, 그리고 생물학적인 것에 바탕을 두는지 여부에 대해 어떤 믿음을 가지고 있는지를 검증하였다. 한국 대학생이 심리적 특질에 대해서 가지고 있는 믿음을 알아보기 위해 연구 1은 대학생 100명을 대상으로 실시되었고, 연구 1의 결과를 재검증하고 일반화할 수 있는 지 여부를 알아보기 위해 연구 2는 다른 대학생 100명을 대상으로 실시되었다. 결과적으로 한국 대학생들은 심리적 특질이 변화할 가능성이 높고, 지속적이지 않으며, 생물학적인 요소보다는 환경적인 요소에 영향을 더 받는다는 증진적 관점(incremental view)과 유사한 관점을 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 이러한 관점은 개념적 정합성을 가진 형태로 존재했다. 또한 ‘똑똑한’, ‘우둔한’, ‘고집 센’은 다른 심리적 특질들보다 더 안정적이고 선천적인 특질이라고 생각하는 반면, ‘공부 못 하는’, ‘씩씩한’은 더 변화될 여지가 많은 특질이라고 생각했다. 본 연구 결과는 심리적 특질의 본질에 대한 한국 대학생의 믿음을 검증하고 일반화 할 수 있는 가능성을 제시한 연구로서, 앞으로 심리적 특질과 관련해서 진행될 많은 연구들의 경험적 토대가 될 수 있으리라 기대한다.
This study examined whether Korean adults believe psychological traits can be relatively stable, consistent, likely to be present at birth, and biological based. One-hundred college students participated in Study 1 and the other 100 college students participated in Study 2. Overall, the results showed that Korean adults have beliefs that resemble the incremental views regarding traits: which they believe are changeable and are highly influenced by a given environment. The Korean adults exhibited very coherent beliefs about psychological traits. Among the traits analyzed, Korean adults seemed to believe that ‘intelligent,’ ‘slow witted,’ and ‘stubborn’ are more stable traits than other traits, but ‘energetic’ and ‘not good at study’ are more changeable than other traits. This research is an attempt to investigate the nature of Korean adults\' beliefs about psychological traits. The results will provide a foundation for future studies on the development of beliefs about traits. Key words : traits, essence, social cognition, person perception
