국가상징이란 국제사회에 한 국가가 존재한다는 사실을 알리기 위해 자기 나라를 잘 알릴수 있는 내용을 그림·문자도형 등으로 나타낸 공식적인 징표로서 국민적 자긍심의 상징적 표현이라 할 수 있다. 따라서 국가상징은 연령·신분의 고하, 빈부의 격차에도 불구하고 그나라 국민이면 누구도 부정할 수 없으며 누구나 공감하고 하나가 될 수 있는 최고의 영속적인 가치를 갖는다. 국가상징으로서 우리의 국기인 태극기의 주요한 기능은 국제사회에서 국가를 대표하는 표면적·상징적 기능 외에도 사회적·도덕적 혼란을 예방하고 국민통합을 유도하는 중요한 내면적 기능을 지니고 있다. 국가상징이 추구하는 목표인 국민통합은 강제적 통합이 아니라 국민 스스로의 자발적 참여를 유도하여 화합과 조화를 기초로 한 규범적 사회통합을 지향하고 있으며, 이를 통해 사회의 도덕적 혼란을 방지하고 문화의 지속성을 보장함으로써 국가의 영속성을 도모하고 있다는 것이다. 요컨대, 태극기와 같은 국가상징이란 한나라의 국민을 하나로 통합하는데 구심체 역할을 할 수 있는 공식적인 표상으로서, 대내적으로는 국민적 일체감을 조성하고, 대외적으로는 국제 사회에서 그 나라의 이미지를 부각시키 는데 매우 중요한 역할을 하고 있다는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 태극기가 지니고 있는 외면적 상징효과를 두 가지로 구분하여 논한다. 즉, 첫째는 국가차원의 나라사랑정신 지향성의 고취-헌신성의 발현, 충성심의 고양, 애국심의 앙양, 둘째는 국민개인차원의 자기의식의 내면화- 정체성, 자긍심, 소속감, 그리고 책임감과 의무감의 확인이라는 것이다.
A national emblem(flag) is the symbolic expression of patriotism, victory, self-assertion and national pride. It is the official symbol that is expressed by drawing, letters, and figures as the contents for publicizing the being of his country to international society. So, irrespective of rank of social position and age ,and the gap between haves and have-nots, A national emblem(flag) have a lasting values that unite into one and feel empathy if the people of his nation. In short, a national emblem as Taegukgi is the official symbol that can do a central role to unify into the people and a national identity in domestic(a internal function as normative social unification), but also a critical role to improve the image of a nation to international society in foreign. In this study, I will discuss the external symbolic effects with Taegukgi; First, it is to infuse patriotism, loyalty and national consciousness into the heart of people in the level of State. Second, internalization of self-consciousness in the level of an individual as the people- it is a confirmation of responsibility, obligation, identity, pride, and a sense of belongings.
