The purpose of this study is to investigate the life experiences of the victims’ families and the actual situations and systems of related agencies of managing disaster, based on the Daegu subway disater. To do so, this study adopted Kawakita's KJ research method which is one of the qualitative research methods, and selected 21 family members of the victims and various private and public agencies managing the disaster in the Daegu subway. With collected data, this study utilized the snowball sampling and reputational-case selection.
The results indicated that victims’ families experienced psycho-social changes in many ways and serious post-traumatic stress. After the disaster they wanted to solve so many problems. However they felt stress and suspicion from others.
In addition, this study discussed that there are many problems within private and public disaster managing agencies working with the Daegu subway disaster. For example, those
agencies do not interact closely with one another and there is no co-ordinating and controlling function among private and public agencies managing the disaster.
In conclusion, this study suggests the imperativeness of the mental health system for overcoming the post-traumatic stress from the disaster as well as sequential systematic disaster management.
