본 연구는 통합교과의 정당성에 대한 논란이 끊임없이 제기되어 온 ‘즐거운 생활’ 교과를 총체적으로 분석하여 개선방안을 탐색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 최근 시행되고 있는 2007 개정 교육과정을 주요구성요소 중심으로 내 재적으로 분석하고, ‘즐거운 생활’을 실제로 가르치고 있는 교사들의 의견을 심층면담, 참여관찰 등을 통해 외재 적으로 분석하였다. 연구결과, 교육과정 문서의 분석에서는 체육이 통합교과의 범주에 포함되어야 할 만한 논리 적 근거를 발견할 수 없었다. ‘즐거운 생활’을 개발하여 실천하는 과정에서 문제점은 현장 상황이 고려되지 않은 통합교과 개발구조로 인해 ‘체육의 소외’, ‘신체활동 구현의 어려움’이 노정되어 있었고, 체육의 특성이 잘 드러나 지 않는 ‘즐거운 생활’ 교과체제와 운동장 수업에 대한 부담은 ‘신체활동 지도기피’의 원인이 되고 있었다. 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위해서는 체육을 ‘즐거운 생활’로부터 분리하는 방안과 전 교과를 대상으로 통합교과를 개발 하고 통합이 어려운 교과는 분과로 운영하는 통합과 분과의 병행체제를 도입하는 방안을 제시할 수 있었다.
The purposes of this paper was to suggest directions for improving the quality of elementary school physical education for lower grade students by analyzing 'Pleasant Life' of the revised curriculum of 2007 which has steadily raised controversy about the legitimacy. In order to reach this goal, internal analysis of document of the revised curriculum of 2007 being implemented was made centered on composing elements suggested by Tyler. External analysis was also made on what elementary school teachers teaching 'Pleasant Life' are experiencing through in-depth interviews and participating observations. The results are as follows: First, there was no reason why physical education should be excluded in an integrated subject investigating 'character', 'objectives', 'contents', 'teaching-learning methods' and 'evaluation' of the curriculum documents. Second, 'alienation of physical education', 'difficulty to teaching physical activities' were result from not considering physical education environment and enclosed structure on the development of the integrated subject. 'Pleasant Life' having few physical characteristics and 'the burden of physical education classes' resulted in 'the avoidance of teaching physical activities'. To solve these problems and improve physical education for lower graders, physical education should be separated from 'Pleasant Life.'
