This study investigated the effects of group art therapy using reality therapy on improving the gratitude
tendency and self-esteem of mothers and sons in multi-cultural families. The study participants were 19 mothers
and sons from eight households of multi-cultural families, who volunteered through the community center for
multi-cultural families in an rural area in the province of Gyeongsang buk-do.
The group art therapy program ran a total of 12 sessions from February 3rd, 2012 to March 30th, 2012, once
or twice a week, each session about one hundred and fifty minutes long. The instruments included a gratitude
scale and self-esteem scale. The data were analyzed using Wilcoxon Rank Sum test, a non-parametric test. The
study found that the group art therapy using reality therapy was effective in improving the gratitude tendency
and self-esteem of the mothers and sons in multi-cultural families.
