본 연구는 통일신라시대 당과 신라 사이에 정치 및 문화 교류의 가교 역할을 담당했던 견당 유학생(宿衛學生)의 활동에 대해 구체적으로 논의함으로써, 당시 견당 유학생들이 미친 신라 하대의 정치․사회․문화적 영향을 알아보고, 나아가 나말 여초에 유교정치이념의 정립과 고려 건국 초기에서의 그들의 역할을 밝히는 데 목적을 두었다. 당시 견당 유학생의 파견 배경은 대내적, 대외적 상황에서 추진된 것이었다. 즉 대내적으로는 선진적인 盛唐문화의 수용으로 유교적 왕도정치의 확립이 필요하였고, 대외적으로 당나라와의 우호적 관계를 통한 정치․사회의 안정화를 도모할 필요가 있었다. 견당 유학생들은 당에서 체류하면서 당의 관직을 맡기도 하여 자신들의 지적 경험과 능력을 발휘하였으며, 그 일부는 당의 외교적 역할과 당 문인 및 학자들과의 교류를 통하여 신라인의 우수성을 표출하기도 하였다. 귀국 후, 그들은 신라 하대의 정치․사회적 모순을 극복하고자 정치개혁을 추진하여 새로운 국가를 건설하고자 노력하였다. 또한 한문화에 대한 광범위한 이해를 통해서 신라의 문화수준을 한층 끌어올리고, 유교제도의 구현, 과거제도 창설의 기초를 제공하였다고 할 수 있다.
The purpose of this study was to look over how the students dispatched to Dang(宿衛學生) had influenced on politics, society and culture in the late Unified Silla dynasty and to make sure their role in establishing the ideology of politics based on confucianism from the last period of the Unified Silla to the beginning of the Goryeo era and also in founding the Goryeo dynasty. At that time, under the inner circumstances, the Silla needed settling the righteous government grounded on confucianism, by accepting the advanced Dang\'s flourishing culture. In the outer country, it wanted stabilizing its politics and society through a friendly relationship with the Dang dynasty. While staying in Dang, sometimes the dispatched students had a chance to take charge of the government services and it gave them the opportunity to show their intellectual experiences and capabilities. After returning home, they tried to propel political reforms and build a new country to overcome the late Unified Silla\'s political and social contradictions. Moreover, it can be said that through broad understanding about Chinese culture, they heightened their own culture and offered the foundation for the testing system to select able government officials.
