This study was aimed at identify the effect of a comic and animation based creativity program on creativity and creative problem solving ability of young children. The problems to verify in this study were like these; How does the comic and animation based creativity program affect children’s creativity in terms of creative ability and creative personality?, How does the comic and animation based creativity program affect children’s creative problem solving abilities in terms of understanding the problem, generating ideas as possible solutions, and making choices required for action? To this end, a comic and animation based creativity program was developed and was applied to the experimental group.
The participants of this study included a total 10 of 5 years old children, who were belonged to M kindergarten in Dongjak-gu, Seoul,. Ten young children who were randomly selected for this study were randomly allocated into the experiment group and the control group.
Instruments employed in this study included Integrated creativity test(Lee & Lee, 2003) and creative problem solving test(Lee, 2006) for young children. Pre-pro testing was performed to verify homogeneity and to analyze the experiment result. The experimental group was exposed to the comic and animation based creativity program, while the control group was exposed to another creativity program not incorporating comics or animations.
The findings of this study were as follows;
First, the children in the experimental group exposed to the comic and animation based creativity program showed improved overall scores than the children in the control group exposed to an ordinary creative program. While the two groups showed a statistically significant difference in terms of their creative skills (i.e., imagination, originality, and non-conventionality), but significant difference was not found in terms of creative personality traits.
Second, the children in the experimental group improved noticeably in terms of creative problem-solving ability (i.e., the ability to understand the problem; to generate ideas as potential solutions; and to make choices for required action) compared to the children in the control group.
These findings showed that the comic and animation based creativity program was effective on improving children\'s creativity and creative problem solving ability. Therefore the program like a comic and animation based creativity program that developed in this study can use effectively for fostering the creativity and creative problem solving skills at kindergartens.
