I studied in this thesis on the characteristics and succession of devil-disciplining-myths which can be devided into two types that is the ‘Marine’ and ‘Inland’ based on the materials of Japan, Korea, Mongol.
In the marine type, the good and bad divinities conflict indirectly and not the aggrieved party but the third superior divinities discipline the bad. In the inland type, the good and bad divinities conflict directly and the aggrieved party discipline the bad for himself. The marine type is dominant in Japan, the inland type is dominant in Mongol. And marine and inland types are mixed evenly in Korea.
It seems that the marine type has been developed in Japan on the background of the fishing culture and the inland type has been develop in Mongol on the background of the hunting culture. We can understand the cause of difference between southern and northern myths of Korea in regard to the narrative order about marriage and birth.
The fundemantal features of marine type were preserved in Pansori such as Heungboga and Cheonhyangga of Korea and Gengimonogatari of Japan. And those of inland type were preserved in the heroic story such as Geser of Mongol and Youchungryeoljeon of Korea.
